Just like a baby who needs utmost attention and care, the best supplies for your dog needs some major consideration, too. Here’s how you can ensure that your pet gets the best toys, food, and other necessities.

Dog Food and Treats

dog in dishwasherYour dog’s needs should be the emphasis when considering what food or treat to buy him. The proper balance of vitamins and minerals should be given, particularly to growing puppies. Sporting and working dog breeds need to eat something that will sustain their hyperactive lifestyle. Dogs that aren’t getting any younger need low-calorie food to avoid weight gain. Don’t scrimp on the budget here no matter how compelling it might be. A healthy dog is reflected by the food he eats.

Dog Leashes and Collars

The size and weight of the dog should be taken into account in choosing the right dog collar. The collar’s material needs attention too. Nylon is good for water-loving dogs since it is more durable and light. For a tougher look, leather collars are a lot better since they are more durable and can even be accessorized with spikes. Dog leashes come in cloth, nylon, retractable, and leather styles.

Dog Toys

The safety of your dog should be the top priority in looking for a dog toy. What fun could be derived from a toy if it will endanger your pet’s life, right? A dog toy should be large enough so that your pet can’t swallow it. However, it should be small enough for your dog to be able to grip it well. The durability of the toys will need major consideration too, especially for dogs that are serious chewers. Light chewers can settle for vinyl and latex dog toys.

Training Guides for Your Dog

Dog whistles, dog harnesses and bitter-tasting sprays compose the wide array of dog-training guides that will keep a dog from chewing. If the chewing problem is a lot more serious, you may want to use a dog bark collar or an electric fence. It is advised that you remain consistent and humane when training your dog. There are many dog training books available that can be helpful when training your dog.

Dog Health Items

Tick and flea infestation control medications are available to ensure that your dog’s health is secured against these pests. Brands like Advantix, Advantage and Frontline are some of the popular flea and tick drugs in the market. Your dog’s dental health should never be taken for granted either. Dog toothbrushes and toothpastes, and even dog toys are now made available to support the dental health of your pet. Following these guidelines will definitely help you have a happy, healthy pet!

Old Dogs And New Tricks

I Know Dogs

Hi
Hope all is well with you and your dog.

Dog chefI came across this article in: USA Today: You Can Teach An Old Dog New Tricks and found that humans and dogs can learn new behaviors. Since all dogs are above average, it should be no biggie. Even humans can learn new tricks like Robert.

They wrote: “FIGURE OUT WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR DOG. Some dogs like balls. Others are very focused on food. Most love attention.”

(Robert, my editor, loves food and attention…balls too, yes, meatballs.)

“Don’t assume that whatever works for your neighbor’s pooch will work for yours, says Victoria Wells, manager of shelter behavior and training at the ASPCA in New York City, who appears on Animal Planet’s “Animal Precinct.” You may have to try more than one approach before finding the best motivator. Once you know what will work, you can teach just about any canine or human a new behavior.”

(Robert is different because he doesn’t do what normal neighbors do. He is so vain that he over responds to compliments, attention, and food at the same time. His best motivator is all three together. Then he pets me on the head and throws me a treat.)

How to Housebreak Your Puppy

Hi Miss Daisy Reporting

Hope all is well with you and your dog.

I remember my first puppy as a young boy. My parents said that if I wanted a puppy I would have to be responsible by feeding, walking, and housebreaking my dog. I of course agreed and set out to carry out my duties.

I knew nothing about training a puppy, feeding a puppy, or grooming a puppy. All I wanted to do was to play with my puppy but I had promised to be responsible and I was. Housebreaking was a word I only heard about.Tidy Tony

My schoolteachers were the most helpful and told me what to do and who to ask for help.

I soon became quite knowledgeable because I loved that little dog and didn’t want to lose him for lack of attention.

His food was table scraps and sometimes he just pooped. Cleaning up was no fun but nevertheless, he was worth it.

I had no real knowledge about the psychology of puppies but soon found out the basics that made life easier as we each grew older.

I wish I had the information below that took me so much time to accumulate. I found out that housebreaking is the most indispensable thing your puppy must learn.

Common sense should tell you why. Do you want your house to stay spic and span? Handle your puppy’s housebreaking well.

Aside from the maintenance of your household hygiene, trained dogs are happy dogs. As creatures of habit, it’s in their nature to keep schedules as pack animals. Here is how you should housebreak your puppy:
